Over the Counter

In financial markets, an instrument is said to be over the counter (OTC) if it does not trade on a centralized exchange. Stocks that trade on the New York Stock Exchange are not OTC, they are said to be exchange traded.

OTC markets can be very large. Some of the most widely traded OTC markets are interest rate swaps, foreign exchange (FX) forwards, and credit default swaps.
