In this paper, we begin by asking what would happen if we could predict periods of underperformance. In the next section we ask how likely we are to be able to predict underperformance, based solely on past performance. This turns out to be quite difficult. In the last section we ask why we might believe that predicting underperformance is easier than it actually is.
